Hi again, strange blogland! I have been away from you for some time now. It is time for me to revisit (and I know, I said this last post) but I want to stay on a semi-permanent basis. I have been busy with school (which I am now done - 4 years of undergrad went so fast!) and my other blog creations:

Been Gone A Long Time

Revisiting something old is like smelling a scent and it triggering a memory. It brings back feelings of days gone by yet is so recent and new.

Revisiting and reloving Vintage Vinyl with a new look on life.

Ironically, these photos were resurrected from my camera, taken in the late summer of 2009. Since the nice weather is upon us once again, there will be many an opportunity for new photos. Soon.

In the time since I've been apart from Vintage Vinyl, I have gotten a new puppy. She is 5 and a half months old now, and she is a beautiful cuddly sweetheart.

Surrealist Spring Saturday

A couple of Saturdays ago I ventured out into the lovely spring weather to view the Surrealist exhibit at the AGO. Walking through Queen's Park during light rainfall was gorgeous and inspiring so I took many photos along the way. The colours, the smells, and the light breeze on my face was calming and made for a delightful stroll.

Spring has sprung, the trees are green, and summer fun is happening already. More good news: I got a job at Anthropologie! And with my employee discount I bought a beautiful blue and white ankle length summer dress . I can't wait for a lovely summer day to wear it and frolic in a park somewhere!

During my trips to New York I would visit a store called Anthropologie in Soho. It is a sister company to Urban Outfitters, kind of like Urban's hippie older sister. It was an absolutely lovely store full of apparel and furniture worthy of calling art. I haven't visited New York in about two years, and have missed that store dearly. But just two days ago the first Canadian store opened and I went right away - the most beautiful store I have ever seen, and the largest. I spent 2 hours in there and revisited the store today, purchasing many beautiful items that I will covet for a long time to come. Definitely my outfits in the near future will include these items for you to see. This store matches my personality and style absolutely flawlessly. If I could live in any store, it would be that one. I would make it my home and live in peace within it.

So it is about damn time I came back from my blogging vacation.
I am happy to see you all posted some lovely comments while I was MIA. I will have the blog up and running again shortly and will be able to respond to all you lovelies. I've only got one more month of stressful school work to deal with and then I am free with no obligations, which we all know equals much more blog fun! But for now I'll post once a week, maybe more if you're good.

Here is some artwork I did for a friend's birthday present. Just a little heads up to what I have been doing with my life since we last spoke. I've got a few others and some more concepts I am working on too.
I just want to move to Australia and make crafts.

Men & Florals

What is it with some men and their inability to "risk their masculinity" by donning a pink or floral garment? They say "pink is for girls" when really, who decided that rule in the first place? The only reason our western culture holds on to these gender stereotypes is so that we can have easy answers. If a little boy plays with his GI Joe while wearing his denim overalls, he is a typical boy, no questions asked. When he picks up his sister's Barbie doll, suddenly all hell breaks loose. Questions of his sexuality arise and parents become worrisome.
I say, what's the difference? In this modern day world, both women and men go to war and spend time in the kitchen. So what if Barbie is grasped in the hands of a 5 year old boy? We accept tomboys, so why not the opposite? It's the 21st century, it's about time we blend the gender roles.

I Am Canadian?

I read an article in Frankie about people perpetuating their own stereotypes. It got me to thinking: what is my stereotype? I am a Canadian, and contrary to popular belief, I do not live in an igloo and have moose and beavers as pets. Occasionally I do catch myself ending my quizzical sentences with "eh?". I have been known to pour a little too much maple syrup on my pancakes, just for good measure, but I don't harvest it fresh from the red maple in my front yard. I don't say "aboot" and I don't have snowshoes. I love Tim Hortons and I hate hockey. Lacrosse is our national sport, but I know nothing about that either. I'm pale and I do tend to shy away from the sun. Overall, I like being a Canadian, whatever that means.

Stormy Weather

Love is the hardest thing. Harder than working on your latest compositional masterpiece, harder than aiming for that big job promotion. When one finds love, how do we know it is true? How do we know the other person reciprocates this love with the same intensity? And how do we know how long it will last? We can't read the stars or consult an online search database. We have to feel it in our hearts. It is the thin ice you want to skate on, but you're afraid you might fall through. We are never certain we believe it, but it's all we dream of. It's a stormy day outside, but I want to jump in.

So my shopping adventure with my friend went semi-well. We went to Urban Outfitters first, where I picked him out some nice clothes, 2 of which he purchased (a heathered tee and an argyle sweater). Then every other store didn't really work too well. It is hard when you are so into shopping and you are with someone who is not. But at least he got a taste of what was out there.

Black Market was having a 50% off sale, so I just HAD to purchase a black leather purse with suede patches, and a blue and yellow floral dress. A few of my blogger companions are on what they call 'shopping bans'. I personally don't know how they have the will power. Shopping is how I spend my days (not to mention my money). Just last week I went shopping and spent almost my whole paycheck on a vintage 60s purse, an American Apparel bodysuit, a 60s dress, and a lovely cameo brooch. I shouldn't complain about how much I shop, though. It's what I do. It keeps me entertained and I have loads of fun doing it. Shopping is a girl's best friend.

AA Anyone?

Today I decided to obnoxiously deck myself out in American Apparel. Good thing I didn't go into the store, for I would have looked like a groupie that just wanted to sleep with the merchandise, get myself pregnant, and birth racerback tanks and snug bandage dresses. If that could happen, I wouldn't need money anymore. Does it hurt giving birth to sweatshop-free jersey material?

I bought a pair of gold sandals for only $23 during my excursion downtown, as well as a pair of lovely and simple black Ked's, which I will be wearing always.

I have a dilemma of sorts. You see, I am throwing this shin-dig of a barbecue at my home in a couple of days, and I thought I had the perfect outfit, but now I am having second thoughts! Out in Yorkville again to take in some much needed shopping therapy. As always, when I walk by a shoe store I know I shouldn't go in. Number one, I don't have enough money to afford lovely shoes right now, and number 2, my feet are huge! So disappointment usually ensues upon browsing. But not today! I found a pair of Dolce Vita 4.5" wedges (pictures below) on sale for only $100. And they fit!

Fountain of Youth

Yesterday my friend and I ventured down to Queen street, and while waiting for a friend, I climbed the rocky fountain that I once climbed all too often as a child. Being older and taller than I once was, it felt different, yet there was a dreamlike familiarity. Kind of like a smell you always smelled, but never knew why or where it came from.
Thanks to one of my best friends for the photos.

Because it was cooler out, I could finally wear my favourite new scarf. I found it in a bin in Kensington Market for only $1, and soon after purchasing I learned it was 100% silk, and a Diane Von Furstenberg original. A close up photo is below.

** She is a hot blonde with an amazingly unique voice. She is rock chic with a touch of folksy softness. I am influenced by the blending of opposite styles, which in turn create something unique in it's own right. Her eyeliner is also to die for. **

3. Why Do You Let Me Stay Here - She & Him

** Who doesn't love Zooey Deschanel? I saw an interview with her and she is the same as I am. She dressed in party dresses as a child, loves the influence of the 1960s mod era, and needs a whole other house to hold all her dresses.**

4. With Arms Outstretched - Rilo Kiley

** Jenny Lewis, the front woman for Rilo Kiley is a divine dresser and an Indie queen. She is cute in everything she wears! Her eclectic blend of folk, rock, and country sound is mirrored by her eclectic clothing. How inspiring! (second photo from a Rilo Kiley concert I went to!) **

5. Under My Bed - Meiko

** Another folksy gal is Meiko, who proves to be eclectic in her own right, but also down to earth and laid back. Her penchant for the 1960s and 1970s styles keep me under the influence. **

6. Swimming Pools - Thao with the Get Down Stay Down
** Thao Nguyen is another indie darling who isn't afraid to dress the way she likes. She pairs simple garments with loud statement pieces in a playful and fun way. Having that ability is the foundation of a fashionable person! **

7. A Day In The Life - The Beatles

** need I say anything about the Beatles? They are my favourite band. And from Please Please Me all the way to Abbey Road, they continue to be one of my biggest inspirations. **

One of my favourite movies is Rushmore (next to Garden State). I went downtown to buy a copy, went into the local American Apparel while I was at it. It really is such a problem that there is an American Apparel in almost every neighbourhood, oh how it tempts me so....
In any case, Rushmore is what I was talking about. Isn't it just a fantastic movie? I really can't get enough of it. Wes Anderson is a genius and this movie takes the best slice of cake on the plate. there is something so intoxicating about Jason Schwartzman wearing a red beret, nerdy glasses, and braces, not to mention his character's extreme genius. He isn't like any normal kid, and that is what makes him such a special person. He befriends a 50 year old divorced man with a penchant for giving power to the underdog, and he falls in love with a lovely and caring school teacher. A very rainy day lifted briefly to reveal sunshine. I was on the hunt for a new vintage store. A drive out to the west end of the city proved fruitful, and there I found a new haven of vintage treasures. Lacking in overall funds, I could only afford one item I really desired. Where I work is not a good place to wear nice clothes. It is hard to move and not get some sort of ice cream substance on yourself or your clothes. That is why today's outfit is nothing fancy, just some dolled up work-friendly clothes. As I was walking home from work, I was listening to Miniature Birds by Grand Archives and it inspired me to avert from my path and down onto a small ledge in the ravine.

Something old:

an engraved wooden box/purse thing I found in my basement. I'm actually not sure how old it is, but I can safely say that I do not know where it came from, whatsoever. But it sure is neat looking!Something new:
a pair of bright yellow high-waisted hot pants I found in the Urban Outfitters sale section yesterday for only $20. They are one of my new favourite items.

Something borrowed:
not necessarily "borrowed" but rather taken from my high school costume department when I was cleaning it out and preparing for my role as costume head for our grade 12 play. Unfortunately, when I graduated, I dumped all my locker contents into the basement, never to be heard from again. Fortunately, as I was rummaging, I managed to unearth them again. A lovely lightweight gray cardigan from Old Navy circa 1994....

... and a tan coloured Members Only jacket, a once thrifted item left over from when we performed West Side Story. A Jet's jacket of course. Jets are the best.

Something blue:
well, something with blue in it. Another great find from the Urban Outfitters sale section, a little cartoon David Bowie shirt for a mere $10. It was just too cute to pass up!

for the fourth day in a row it has been cloudy, raining, and unusually cold. Not that I am complaining, I love both the rain and anything that isn't sticky hot Toronto summer weather. It was a good excuse to play around with layers and wear my Fry's that I haven't worn in a dogs age. The weather makes me want to bargain hunt. Which reminds me that my 6 silk scarves are still waiting for me at the cleaners. Alas, what an unfruitful memory I have.

A Quaint Level of Charm

Back in the 1960s, Yorkville was the hub of creativity, with cheap rents and an artistic circle like no other. It was a hippie haven. Artistic folk flocked from all over the city to bask in the quaint neighbourhood's charm and artistic muse. But soon it was on the police radar, described not as an artistic community, but as a drug circle. Buildings were boarded up, hippies were forced out of their homes, art studios left vacant. Sterile condominiums were built where once there was artistic flourish, and rents soared higher than ever before. Soon the richest of the rich moved to this new and improved area of Toronto, feeding off the couture stores that landed there. This is the Yorkville of today. I guess you could say I am trying to channel the Yorkville of yesterday.

Today I stumbled upon a wonderful website for the fashion crazies out there. It is called Polyvore. You can create sets with shoes, skirts, dresses, pants, accessories and more from designers and clothing stores all over the world. Simply sign up, click 'Create a Set', and suddenly thousands of stylish items are at your fingertips. Whether you go simple, adding a dress, a pair of mary janes, and a slouchy bag, or you amp it up with a feathered gown and a designer headpiece, the fashion world is your oyster.
I signed up just this morning and created my first set. A classic black and white. Oh yeah, and I am determined to get those shoes, no matter what.

There is something so romantic about Paris. The old and the new blend together in this magical place. Cobblestone alleyways give birth to new life as cafe doors swing open, billowing out the smell of freshly baked croissants. It is here that the Eiffel Tower is given light and Notre Dame sits among the shadows. It is where I wish I could be.

I found perfect cycle shorts to wear underneath shorter items so I may be more frivolous with my movements. This is also the debut of my tunic dress from Free People. Oh how I adore it.

I had a long day of walking around the city yesterday. I shopped in Little Italy, Kensington, and Queen West. I realized that everything Urban Outfitters is carrying can be found in Kensington market for 1/2 the price, and twice the wear.

On A Rainy Monday

A heat wave has hit Toronto and all day it has been humid, with splashes of rain showers.
Going out seemed the perfect remedy for an uneven day.

I went to Flick & Company, a local antique furniture store, to eyeball my newest love: an antique white vanity from 1910.
It might be mine soon enough.

$40 frames. I will have to get real lenses in them. To buy or not to buy?
(I have comfort in the fact that they aren't going anywhere fast, so I await your suggestions)

Also on my travels I bought a beautiful Free People cotton dress. Very very VERY mini, so I must venture to my local AA for some short shorts. Photos will be posted of my dress when it is no longer PG13.
I would love to hear from all of you whether I should buy the glasses or not. I have yet to decide!

Distill My Brights

Going down to the Distillery is always a beautiful adventure. The wonky cobblestones below your feet, old, weathered gray-stone buildings, rickety wooden floorboards. As I stand in the main square I can picture socialite women dressed to the nines, held together by corsets and bustles, sashaying down the cobblestone walk with a parasols in hand. Men adorned in top hats checking their pocket watches as their shiny black shoes clack on the stone beneath their feet. It is a romantic time. Then I am jolted out of my reverie by the remembrance of the true use of this neighbourhood: making beer.
Sweaty men in overalls rolling barrels of beer down the road isn't exactly my idea of romance, so I will stick to my own dreams.

Coney Island Baby

Every month a delightful little magazine appears in the shops along Queen Street West. Called ION, this little gem of a magazine includes interviews with up and coming designers, beautiful editorials, info on the latest movies, music, books, happenings, and delightful little cartoons (some of which offer a 19+ giggle). Even with it's headquarters located in Vancouver BC, people all over Canada can enjoy this pint sized wonder.
Oh, and did I mention that it is free?

This is the best editorial I have found in this magazine to date. I am smitten. Each outfit I want even more than the one before it. I especially adore the last one, with the tap suit, thigh-high socks, and red bow tie. I'm going to rummage through my wardrobe and see if I can unearth similar items. To start, I've got the bow tie (courtesy of Courage My Love for $2). Now to find the floral tap suit. Something tells me I need a trip to ye ol' thrift store. Tally ho!

May Flowers Bring June.... Something.

It is the 4th of June. The sky is gray, and without my slippers, my toes become too cold for comfort. What is with this weather? I do enjoy rain, don't get me wrong. But when I have waited 8 months for weather suitable for my new Salvatore Ferragamo cherry red sandals (which I purchased 4 months ago, in the dead of winter) I tend to get a little antsy. Spring is my favourite season! And mother nature has robbed me of it. In March it felt like February, in April it felt like March, and in May it felt like April. Get the pattern? I do. And it frustrates me. I am eagerly awaiting the June flowers from many a May shower. Whilst waiting, I have created a list of fun Summer activities I want to complete when the weather decides to agree with me.

Write a song - I love music and I love my amateur guitar skills. Done preferably while sitting in a field on the grass. Makes for better concentration and less noise.
Film a happening - anything will do. I can film my bike trip down to Rosedale Valley. Speaking of which...
Organize a bike trip - gather my friends, make a picnic, bring my video camera, adorn a helmet, and off we go.
Find gems in Value Village - though I usually opt for the glamour of Kensington Market, I have yet to venture deep into the Value Village stockist, and it is about damn time.

Who doesn't love a romp in Kensington or Value Village in search of vintage pleasures?
I have an affinity for hippie garb, and yesterday was all about adding to my collection. But would you believe the items I purchased were in fact, not from second hand stores? They were brand new. No previous owner, and no dry cleaning necessary.
Some of my purchases were inexpensive...

Hipster Faux Pas

Picture your typical twenty-something female hipster and what do you see? Distressed white Keds, Skinny jeans, a cotton t-shirt with a witty slogan like "Save the Whales", a checkered scarf swung 'round the neck, and a headband plastered around their scruffy hair. Sounds good, right? Well, up until the headband, I would agree with you. I have a few words that will express my distaste for this hipster fashion.
This headband first made it's debut to me via a pretentious American Apparel employee, and ever since then, it seems the headband gods have been punishing me.
I just can't see the stylistic appeal of this head garment. Mainly because of the fact that it is humanly impossible to wear the style without it messing one's hair and making one look like a complete goon. Mind you, if I could sport the style with grace, and no hair out of place like this American Apparel model has so perfectly done, I would consider giving it a trial run. But as long as I live in the natural world where there are such things as wind and movement, that will never be.
This fashion should be left to those with an affinity for hippie garb and the nostalgia for the good ol' days when one took a barefoot romp in the grass without checking to see if there were razor blades or needles hidden below.
Best of luck to those who choose this fashion, but me, I'll just stand over here in the corner and watch.

A Spring in my Step!

I went shopping today, avoiding studying as per usual. I meant to just take a trip to the local Presse International for a May magazine or two (which were not yet released, unfortunately) and I stumbled upon a lovely little shoe store called Lustre, a stone throw away from Carrot Common. Now I usually have nothing but back luck in shoe stores (being a women's size 11) so I didn't have high hopes. But what I found was beyond imaginable. Many gorgeous shoes by Kenzie, Bobbi Blue, Seychelles, and more. Each shoe displayed wonderfully on plates of glass held up by knotted white rope. They also carried wonderful bags, large enough for a small dog (but I do not condone carrying dogs in bags, it's just not right) and this one lovely distressed leather wallet that I would give my pinky finger for. Needless to say, I made a purchase. And an excellent one at that. If you haven't heard of Seychelles shoes, you best check them out. They just scream divinity and handcrafted wonderment.

Here are a few snapshots of my latest pair of spring shoes that will literally knock your socks off, which will be appropriate since we are heading into spring.

It's nice having a plethora of new shoes to wear for the spring, which I do, sitting conveniently in piles on my bedroom floor, just waiting for the warm weather to stay long enough for a jaunt in the park.
Another pair of shoes I can't wait to crack open are my apple red Ferragamo t-strap sandals. But we'll not mention those, and their break-the-bank cost of a little over $400.

Am I More Adventurous?

Soldiers come quickly, I feel the earth beneath my feet!

Just a snippet of brilliance from Rilo Kiley's song The Execution Of All Things from their 2002 album of the same name.
I have these jolts of obsessions with certain artists slash musicians slash songs, and when I listen to them my insides melt into goo. This is one of those jolts. And it is to do with Rilo Kiley. The first song I heard was in 2005, when my friend sent me a song or two. The first full length album of theirs that I listened to (and loved) was their most frequent one, Under the Blacklight. I actually purchased that one! I know, ridiculous. In any case, ever since then I have been working backwards and discovering the brilliance that is Rilo Kiley. And if you haven't heard of them, where have you been? Either with your hipster head in a hole, or being too enticed by the umbrella'd Rhianna, insane Britney, and the ever declining Fall Out Boy (which I can be proud to say I have ignored since their first single came out). If you are the former, I hand you a shovel, and if you are the latter, dig yourself your own hole to stick your head in.

Hello!
I've always tried to write diaries when I was a youngster, but to no avail. I always wished I could, though. Keeping heartfelt times and memories locked up in a frilly pink lined notebook seems just delectable to me. Alas, with the advent of schooling, my time was (and still is) eaten up by homework, studying, and the like. But now, as I sit at my shiny silver Macbook, given to me as a gift for my eighteenth birthday, I welcome you to my frilly pink online notebook.
You could be asking yourself "why on earth is this blog necessary?" My answer to you: I have no idea. It is just one of thousands splattered across the interweb. Today I write to you from the sanctity of my living room couch, whilst it rains something terrible outside. My other laptop sits at my feet, downloading 7 album torrents at once. It's my windows laptop, which I could give a rat's behind about, for the battery doesn't last longer than 25 minutes.
I ramble, I should warn.
Moving on, today is my first of two study days before the barrage of first year final exams hits me like a speeding train. Why am I not studying? Another fantastic question. One that can be answered with one word: procrastination. I am the master, nay, the guru of procrastination. I constantly ask myself why I do it, but I get no response.
I would like to finish off with a little bit of a 'what can I expect' type deal.
These are my musings, my thoughts, likes, dislikes, opinions, and suggestions. You can expect that I will discuss music, movies, art, and culture. Also, with my major being fashion, you shall be assured I will dabble in that field a wee bit.
